We have to make a big statement--to our leaders, to our community, to the world--that we will not just stand by and watch our voting rights get stripped away. We need to turn out tomorrow in huge numbers to show that we will not be silenced.

From our friends at Swing TX Left:

"Texans turned out in record numbers last fall, so now Governor Abbott and his cronies in the legislature are seizing power, shutting down polling places, and erecting barriers to voting in order to silence the voices of Black, brown, young, Indigenous, and new Americans and govern only for the wealthiest few.

Right now, Senate Bill 7, House Bill 6, and more than 50 restrictive anti-voter bills are snaking their way through the Texas Legislature. Together, we can stop these restrictive voting measures by joining together to ensure lawmakers know - Voter Suppression has no place in Texas.

Voters, lawmakers, advocates, business leaders, and artists will gather together for a statewide day of action to protect the right to vote on Saturday, May 8th. We are speaking out to protect our freedom to vote, so we can elect leaders that actually look out for our families, delivering the winter storm relief, health care, and jobs our communities need."

And from the Texas Civil Rights Project:

"Under the cover of darkness, at 4 am this morning, the Texas House voted to advance the omnibus anti-voter bill, Senate Bill 7. The final bill is NOT yet available to the public but appears to be quite different from the previous version. It will likely head to a conference committee in the Senate this afternoon where, behind closed doors, lawmakers will be able to pick and choose what ends up in the final version of the bill.

This process and the passage of potentially harmful bills in the middle of the night as Texans sleep is literally how democracy dies in darkness. That’s why we’re gathering TOMORROW for a rally to demand that our voices be heard and that Texas legislators reject voter suppression in all forms. Join us tomorrow, Saturday, May 8th, at 11 am CT on the South steps of the Texas Capitol in Austin OR at Emancipation Park in Houston!"
