VOLUNTEER WITH THE SOUTHWEST DEMOCRATS!

There are so many ways that you can volunteer with the club, and we wouldn’t have had the successes we’ve had in the past without an army of volunteers.

Here are some of the ways you can get involved and make a difference:

  • Being an Election Judge or Poll Worker - It takes a huge number of people to successfully staff all of the polling locations on Election Day. Signing up to be an election judge or a poll worker helps ensure our vote integrity.

  • Becoming a Precinct Chair or Block Captain - if there is a vacancy for precinct chair in your precinct, we can help get you appointed. Precinct Chairs and Block Captains oversee the Democrats in their precinct or local area to make sure they’re educated about elections and what’s on the ballot. This is part of what is called “relational organizing.”

  • Canvassing (a/k/a “block walking”) - knocking on doors of voters to remind them to vote and support the Democratic slate.

  • Texting via the Reach App - The Reach app allows you to send text messages directly to your friends, family, coworkers, etc., to remind them to vote. This is much more effective than generic text messages that are sent out blindly via a service.

  • Phone Banking - One of the oldest, but still effective, methods of voter contact is simply by calling them on the phone.

  • Postcard Writing - Sending a personalized postcard to voters is far more effective than bulk mailers. Postcard writing parties are a great way to socialize with other activists and find out about additional ways to volunteer.

  • Dropping Lit at Apartments - Dropping literature (or “lit”) on apartment doors is a great way to stay in shape and inform voters about the election without direct contact. Apartments often get ignored due to many challenges, but there are a LOT of Democratic voters in apartments that we need to vote!

  • Sharing Social Media - Due to changes in the way that many social media platforms operate (Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, etc), it’s often hard for political organizations to have their posts seen. By sharing and interacting regularly with our social media posts, it boosts their overall visibility.

  • Handing Out Lit at Polls - Providing voters with our slate card of Democratic candidates will encourage voters to cast a ballot for EVERY office, not just the ones at the top. It is vital that we protect our down-ballot races.

  • Poll Watching - During an election, poll watchers, who have been trained by the local Democratic Party, monitor activity within the polling locations to ensure that no one’s right to vote is being impaired.

If you’d like to get involved, even if you’ve never done any of these activities before, don’t hesitate to let us know! We are always willing and eager to train new volunteers. Don’t be shy!
